How my alter taught me open-mindedness

My altar is in my home office. I’ve been putting sweet things that connect me to something bigger here for years.

Creating an altar is a reminder to stay open-minded. I think that’s the whole point of it. My medium told me to add a white candle and a dish of water to my home altar. I didn’t flinch. That’s the main point of me writing this - not that I have an altar, although I’ll tell you about that too - but that I said yes without skepticism.

I had an altar on a shelf in my office before I met with the medium. I started adding things that helped me connect with something bigger. It’s a little spot that makes me smile every time I see it. But it’s more than that—it reminds me to stay open to the possibility that there’s more to this life than what we can see.

My little altar is a shelf in my office where I put:

  • Crystals

  • A painting I made at a coaching retreat

  • Photos of my family

  • Incense

  • A white candle

  • A chime

  • A salt lamp

  • A bowl of water (newly added)

Why? These items remind me of my spirit guides, higher self, source, Mother Earth, my favorite people, and my connection to my ancestors. It makes me smile and warms my heart. I think that’s the whole point. It’s a small place in my home that I regularly look at and think, ahh I am part of something bigger. This is a moment in the universe and I am lucky as hell to be here for it. It feels good.

Erin (the medium) said the bowl of water will call in my spirit guides and ancestors. Maybe they’re thirsty or want to take a dip after their long journeys. And, she said, the white candle can help light the way.

We are born open-minded. As children, we live without discernment, taking the world at face value. It is during that time that we build our roadmap - filled with the beliefs, emotions, and impressions that guide us through life.

As an adult, I’m finding my way back to that space. Being open to energy and other realms and the quantum field feel like small acts that I can do to get back there.

I have been seeing 11:11 almost daily for months now. That’s what gave me the idea to seek out a medium. I wanted to see if there was a message from the other side that someone was trying to tell me. She told me many things, like I should make an offering to an orca and that my guides, including Archangel Michael, want me to call on them more. They can help guide me in my daily life. And then the stuff about the altar. I say, why not? Why not believe in the unknown? It feels easier to wonder and believe than deny and get skeptical. Belief = open. Skeptical = closed. I know which one I choose.

Do you have an altar? A place for connection to something bigger? It can be a shelf, a tabletop, a corner, or a place in your mind, something to remind you to stay open to the magic of life.
