Why my word for 2024 is ease

Imagine a leaf floating down from a tree in the fall. It twists and hovers as it lowers slowly to the ground, landing softly. Ease. The feeling when things go right not because certain things happened but because you witnessed the entire experience from a mindset of things going well. That long line when you’re in a rush. Then the thought: oh now I have a minute to text my friend back or read that long email I put off. Encountering life with a sense of ease. This is going well. I find peace in the ordinary and dance with one foot in the extraordinary.

My word of 2024 is ease. I will check in with myself throughout the year and say, how is this going? Do I feel at ease? That’s it. I sat in meditation at the end of December and asked myself, what do I want in 2024? Yes, there are goals and things I want to DO but the question I asked was, how do I want to feel? In the face of the day to day, what mindset do I want to approach life with?

2022: Peace

2023: Surrender

2024: Ease

Picture this: the pile of dishes, the dirty stovetop, the messy floor after dinner with your family. I can look at this as a chore and get overwhelmed and feel ugh OR I can remind myself what beautiful meal my family and I shared. And how lovely the kids are bringing in the dishes from the table and my partner is putting away the leftovers and we’re working together and this is beautiful. You stand at the sink and take in the moment. The pause. Welcoming ease.

There will be moments when I don’t see things with ease. Those are the times I pause and ask myself, who is upset right now? What part of me feels off balance and needs attention? I breathe and listen to my heart’s whispers. I can bring myself back into a state of ease.

What is your word? What state of mind do you want to live in this year? What thought will bring you back to the present moment, away from the ledge of losing yourself?
